BOWLING TOURNEY

MATCHES AT ROTORUA FINAL STAGES REACHED AUCKLAND RINKS SUCCESSFUL [BT TELEGRAPH—OWN' CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Friday After to-day's play in the Rotorua Bowling Club's open rinks tournament, three Auckland rinks —Robertson (Oneliunga), Maher (Auckland), and Gardiner (Otahuhu) —and Michell (Wliitiora) were the only surviving teams of the 14 which qualified during the morning for post-section play to-morrow morning. Maher is to meet Robertson and Gardiner is to play Michell in tho semi-finals, the winners meeting during the afternoon to decide the title. The qualifiers at tho conclusion of section play were.—Robertson (Onehunga), Bremner ("West End), nine wins, one loss; Chiplin (Rawhiti), Michell (Whitiora), Queenin (Rotorua), Stewart (Matamata), Letham (Ponsonby), Higginbotiiam (Ponsonby), eight wins, two losses; Gardiner (Otahuhu), Hopwood (West End). Hill (Carlton), de Launay (Carlton), Duncan (Remuera), Maher (Auckland), seven wins, three losses. Of the three teams with six wins in section C at the beginning of the final section round in the morning, only Wright (St. Heliers) failed to qualify. He was decisively beaten by King 1 (Manawatu). In section A Gardiner (Otahuhu) beat Hopwood <West End), but Hopwood was already assured of qualifying, with seven wins, while Gardiner's win also brought him into (he post-section contests. In a close finish Forrest (Taneatua) inflicted another loss upon Letham (Ponsonby), who. however, led.in section D with Stewart (Matamata) yifii eight wins. A win for Maher (Auckland) against Tongo (Grey Lynn) resulted in the Auckland rink qualifying with seven wins in the first round of post-section play. Tho Matamata rink was too strong for de lAunay (Cailton), who went down 26—15, Matamata scoring two fives arid a four.

Robertson's Onehunga rink was again playing a remarkably accurate game against Higginbotham, the Ponsonby skip frequently being left with four and five shots to attempt to "kill" the head. Although at times successful, he eventually lost, 20 —17. Another runaway win was secured by Gardiner against Letham, who .lost 20 —13. while Queenin, Maher and Chiplin all had fairly closo wins. The Quarter-finals There was a particularly largo gallery to witness the quarter-final matches. Gardiner meeting Hopwood for tho second time during tho day. Gardiner had another good win, 23—15. while the Auckland Club rink, skipped by Maher. gave a splendid display to beat the strong Matamata team. Although ho was down on the first few heads, Robertson easily accounted for Duncan (Remuera) on the 17th head. Queenin was one point ahead of Michell, but a bad Bhot by the Rotorua skip on the 18th gave Michell the lead with a three. Whitiora scored another four on the next and, with Rotorua requiring six for a draw on the final head, Queenin was faced with an almost impossible task. Fine play by the skip, however, nearly achieved the desired objective, for with a drive he cut out two of the opponents' bowls and with the next drew a shot. On a measure being taken, Queenin had five shots on tho head, losing the match by one point, after a great effort to save it.
