EXPLOSION IN TENT

STOREMAN FOUND DEAD EVIDENCE AT INQUEST [BY TELEORAPII OWN' CORRESPONDENT J PUTARURU, Friday The discovery was made in a Public Works Department camp tent at Pairere, seven miles from Tirau, yesterday. of the body of Mr. Edgar David Hamilton MeEwen, aged about 39. of 30 Seaview Terrace, Mount Albert. '1 he body was found lying on a bunk, the centre of which had collapsed, apparently from the force of an explosion. Mr. MeEwen. who was a married man. was employed by the Public Works Department 'as a storeman and timekeeper. An inquest was opened tins afternoon at Putaruru before the coroner, Mr. M. St. J. Paxton. The engineer, Roy B. Penlington, stated that Mr. MeEwen had left the camp on Friday night and had not returned to work on Monday and Tuesday. He had appeared to lie in low spirits last week. Apparently he had returned to the camp last night Mr. MeEwen had been in charge of the magazine at the camp. It was stated that occupants of near by tents had heard a sharp explosion at about eight o'clock yesterday morning. Tho inquest was adjourned sine die.
