NOTES ON RUNNING

MASTER ANOMALY'S WIN RECORD TIME APPROACHED i STUDLEY ROYAL'S EFFORT [by TELEGHAra —own correspondent] DUNEDIN, Thursday The Warrington Hurdles proved to be a good betting race. After waiting behind Dclrain and Vitaphone until reaching the back stretch, Master Anomaly moved up with Sir Admiral*. Mpster Anomaly went out to tho front four furlongs from home, and had opened np an unbeatable gap at the last hurdle. He came on to win from Superex, who out-stayed Dclrain in tho run homo. The winner went close to the record for the distance, held by Arctic Star at 2.43*. Mulatto was made a short-priced favourite "Tor the Trial Handicap, but her supporters got a bad run for their money. The favourite began well, but soon drifted. Lochie lliver and Pink Del made the running to the straight, where Spanish Lad came on to beat the pair of them. Atalanta Lass and Auctor were next. { ' Roy Bun's Slow Start Roy 13un was a bit slow on his legs in the early part of the Berwick Handicap, but raced past Valmarch, Mutus, Combat and Nightwings to win going away. Valmarch and Combat had set the pace, ( but the latter stopped. Paper Slipper and Viking were slow away at the rise of the barrier to a snap start in the Publicans' Handicap. Gipsy Fair, Silver Sail and Bay Duke were smartest out, and they showed the way to the far turn. Gipsy Fair then took charge, but dropped out at tho home turn. Alma and Top Row were moving up as they straightened for home. Top Bow finished on well and won by a length from Bay Duke, with Alma a close third. Viking made up a lot of ground to finish, but, alter being slow away, Paper Slippor appeared to get a bad run, and was never dangerous in'the final three furlongs. ■' •

Cup Favourite's ' Handicap Milford was the only absentee from the card for the Duncdin Cup. High Glee was made a good favourite, but lie had to give away too much ground. With six furlongs to no, Ponty was pulled up in front of the stand, owing to his rider losing a stirrup leather. Pink Pobe soon took charge from Trivet, who was hard ridden to get into second place. Studley Royal was running a close third, with Silver Streak and Davolo next. Pacing past the six-furlong post, High Glee raced ui> on the outside, and Galleon also made a forward move. High Glee could not sustain his long run and . dropped back in the straight, but he was set an impossible task, as they ran the first half-mile in 50 3-os, and the first six furlongs in 1.14 3-5. Good Passage held up the start of the Champagne Stakes for over. 20 minutes and, after dropping G. Humphries three times, bolted and took no part in the race. Raeburn nnd Ortyx were hopelessly left at the start. Dunstan. and Netherlea led out from Passaform, who was joinedvby Ortyx, nnd Paeburn was following them as they turned for home. Passaform, Dnnstan, Netherlea and Ortyx were hunched 100 yds from the. post. A good finish resulted in Dnnstan beating Passaform by a bead. Netherlea was a length away, witn Ortyx the same distance off, and Pnelmrn next. r lhe others were right out of it. Judging by the ground made up bv Paeburn aiid Ortyx, they wcfe;" unlucky to miss a first or second between them. * Good Sun's Success Paladino and Stolen March were taken out of the Stewards' Handicap and Good Sun was made a strong odds on chance. He won, but only after wearing down Somr Boy in the last few strides. Queen Dorothy did well to finish third under 0.13. but the others were stopping at the finish. The scratching pen reduced tho field for the President's. Handicap to four runners. Roseman made the running and. to the straight, where Paladino joined him. was apparently going comfortably. When, however. Paladino ■was railed on, l?osoivian just managed ito stall him off and win bv a head. Perhaps the rider of Paladino was a shade over-confident, but, in any case, the winner had a great advantage 'n the weights. Parley Almond was three lengths away.
