STOCKS AND SHARES

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE , f downward trend-continues Although tho number of transactions increased considerably on tho Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, following tho dull period on the previous day, there was no sign of recovery, investment values continued their downward movement, losses far outnumbering gains. Further evidenco of the cautious attitude of investors was furnished by the fact that the gilt-edged section was practically the only one to present a strong trout. Banks wore slightly steadier, and improvement took place in Commercials of Australia. English, Scottish and Australians, however, were marked down. Leading insurances wero inclined to weaken, and South British lost somo ground. More interest was shown in gas issues, In breweries, New Zealands failed to maintain tho recent slight recovery, and levels were depressed. Metals were a shade stronger on overseas reports, Broken Hill Proprietary changing hands twice at an advance. Other Australian industrials were dull. A feature of tho Dominion issues was a sharp .decline in M. K. Millinery in the first transfer since early in December.' Tho steady declino in Woolworths (Sydney) continued.
