QUESTION OF EXEMPTIONS Conditions of employment for workers ■in charge of the propellitfg engines in launches, tug-boats and scows trailing within defined river limits or extended " " river limits are contained in an award issued for the Auckland Engine-Drivers, Biver Engineers, Marine EngineDrivers »nd their assistants' Union by the Second Arbitration Couft yester-t day. In a memorandum attached to the .award Mr. Justice Hunter states that 't the principal matter referred to the Court related to exemptions and that in oijher respects the award embodied the recommendations arrived at in Conciliation Council. The award leaves hours of work for mutual adjustment by the employer and the worker in the case of workers employed on scows and substantially engaged in towing shingle, sand, firewood, timber barges or logs, f* and fixes them at a maximum of 88 a fortnight, or 10 in any one dqy in the case of launch and tug drivers. The maximum weekly hours for these two classes of workers is fixed at 52. Total exemption from the provisions of the award is granted to tho following:— Aspden Shipping Company, Limited; Auckland Harbour Board; F. and E. Craig; Devonport Steam Ferry V Company, Limited; A. G. Frankham, Limited; Hokianga Co-operativo Dairy Company, Limited; Gisborne Harbour Board; Kaipara Steamship Company, Limited; Union Steam Ship Company, Limited; Waiheke Passage Company; Watkin and Wallis; and the Whangarei Harbour Board. The Court has made the wages provisions retrospective to December 17. ; The award will remain in force until February 9, 1939.
