PLAN FOR DIRECTION TABLE HISTORIC WHAKATANE SITE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE, Thursday The erection of a direction table on the old Armed Constabulary redoubt reserve on the bluffs above Whakatane will be a feature of the celebrations during tho centenary of New Zealand in 1940. This decision was reached at a meeting of the Bay, of Plenty Maori and Historical Pesearch Society, which, for a year, has had the project under discussion. Lord Bledisloe, who is a former patron of tho society, and who hopes to be a visitor to New Zealand in 1940, is to be asked to attend the opening ceremony. The direction table will indicate historic spots in the district and will show tho bearings of some of the principal Pacific islands connected with the Maori migrations to New Zealand.
