OVERLOADED LORRIES
CARRIERS FINED AT THAMES ONE DEFENDANT TO PAY £lB [by TELEC HA I'll —OWX t'ORRESPOXn EXT ] THAMES, Tuesday A carrier, Frederick Plows, of Whitianga, was fined £lB by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., for overloading his lorry on trips from Auckland to Whitianga. "He carries extra loads without paying one penny extra," said the magistrate. "The extra load means that every bridge ami culvert on the road will he sprung. He has already been convicted of similar offences." . The traffic inspector, Mr. J. W. Johnstone, gave evidence that Plows held a licence for three trips weekly, but found it physically impossible to do this. He had admitted that ho was endeavouring to make two trips do the work, and was overloading to compensate for the loss of the third trip. The inspector said Plows was a hardworking man, whereupon the magistrate said: —-"I daresay, but a lot of hardworking men are paying for the roads. His loads are excessive, and 1 will fine him at the rate of sixpence per ton mile."
Fines of 40s each were also imposed on T. Yerran, L. White and S. Pinnell, and 20s on H. J. Southee, for overloading their lorries.
