PATHOLOGIST'S WORK

EIGHT TO SPECIAL FEES EVIDENCE IN MURDER CASES PAYMENTS BY GOVERNMENT Recommendations regarding the amount of private work to be undertaken in future by Dr. W. Gilmour, pathologist at the Auckland Hospital, were adopted at a meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday. The Finance Committee had previously recommended that Dr. Gilmour should be given the same privileges in regard to private fees as pathologists in the other centres, allowing for retention of fees for coroners' post-mortem examinations, preparation of Court case 3 and reports and of Court fees.

The matter was discussed at length when the first report of the committee was before the board, and it was referred back for further consideration. However, the committee yesterday repeated its original recommendations, which were adopted without discussion.

At the earlier meeting it was decided to pay Dr. Gilmour £6O for his work on the Bayly murder case, out of a total of £262 10s received from the Justice Department. Yesterday, it was stated that Dr. Gilmour had used his own car for 150 miles while he was engaged on the case, and a recommendation that he should be allowed £5 5s mileage was adopted. The committee also reported that Dr. Gilmour had been required to attend the recent Napier murder trial and was absent from the hospital for a total of nine days in March, April and May. It recommended that the Justice Department should be charged £lO 10s a day for his services, a total of £94 10s. This was adopted.
