HIGHWAY TOO NARROW
GREAT SOUTH ROAD PROBLEM PROVISION FOR THE FUTURE " The pioneers did not visualise the development of road traffic to its present state and a main south highway only a chain wide is inadequate to cope with modern and future lequirements," said Mr. H. C. E. Ernest at a meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board last night. Mr. Ernest, who attended as agent in connection with a snbdivisional plan of a property which has a four-chain frontage to Great South Road at tho East Tamaki Road corner, said tho property owners appreciated the possibility of the Great South Road, which was the main arterial highway, having to be widened considerably at no distant date. They had accordingly drawn a plan setting back the property frontage to a depth of 10ft. from the present road boundary. The strip of land to this depth along the frontage for nearly four chains, was being offered as a gift to the board. Tho chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, in thanking the owners, said they bad shown commendable foresight. It was obvious that a general road widening scheme would have to be faced by the authorities sooner or later.
