HEATED BUNKER COAL.
WORK ON STEAMER DEVON.
FUMES HAMPER DISCHARGING. [BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The removal of the heated coal from the bunkers of the steamer Devon at Port Chalmers has been rendered very difficult by reason of the fumes rising from the heated mass. Occasionally the men have to cease work while water from two fire hoses is played on the coal. Clouds of steam then rise from the bunker, but the water momentarily reduces the temperature and cleanses the atmosphere of the fumes, which are extremely unpleasant.
The dismantled steamer Mokoia was brought alongside the Devon to-day and the coal was discharged into her holds. Although the work of emptying the bunkers is being continued day and night, all the coal is not likely to be out for two or three days owing to the heat and fumes in the bunker.
