CRIMINAL CHARGES.
SUPREME COURT OPENS.
iTHREE JUDGES ENGAGED,
TOTAL OF SIXTEEN CASES.
ONE NO BILL RETURNED
The quarterly criminal sessions of the Supreme Court in Auckland opened yesterday before. Mr. Justice Kennedy and Mr. Justice Blair. Mr. Justice Herdman will preside to-day and will probably be assisted by both the other judges. The charge to the grand jury was delivered by Mr. Justice Konnedy, who pointed out that of 16 indictments eight concerned charges of a sexual nature. Two cases alleged theft and false pretences, two assault, and four negligent and reckless driving of motor vehicles causing death.
There were but two persons charged with offences of dishonesty. The charges of theft were quite of the ordinary type. Several charges of false pretences were made against an educated Chinese, who was alleged to have obtained from his fellow-countrymen money to procure an extension of their permits to stay in New Zealand and to have appropriated it to his own use. The assault charges would present no difficulty.
The following were chosen as the grand jury:—Messrs. H. B. Burnett (foreman), B. C. Chilwell, W. G. Cain, F. M. Winstone, J. Ward, G. Tutt, A. Thompson, J- 0. Sims, M. Schroff, K. McK. Rutherford, J. J. Rich, A. A. Martin, R. Knbx, R. C. Laird, J. J. Kingston, A. Hallet, A. E. Ford, A. T. Dow, H. R. Craig, G. H. E. Collins and S. S. Clarke.
. The grand jury returned true bills in every case except that of Olliver Godfrey, charged with negligently riding a motorcycle, thereby causing death.
