TUNNEL UNDER THE MERSEY
FIVE YEARS' UNDERTAKING
The longest under-water tunnel in the world is being constructed between Liverpool and Birkenhead under the Mersey. When completed it will be about two and n-half miles long, and will be sufficiently wide to allow four lines of traffic on its upper roadway and two lines on its lower.
It will take about five years to complete, though the most up-to-date plant and labour-saving machinery are being employed. From the beginning a fleet of nine narrow-gauge storage-battery electric locomotives have been used to expedite the work, and recently six more .were ordered from Leeds.
A million tons of rock have to be removed before the tunnel is finished, and 135,000 tons of cast-iron plates will be Used to keep it watertight.
