TEAM CENTRE-POLES.
NO IMMEDIATE REMOVAL.
PROSPECT OF WIDER CARS.
QUESTION OF THE CLEARANCE
There seems to be no immediate prospect of the removal of tho tramway centre-poles. The matter was considered by the Auckland Transport Board last evening. The general manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said the scheme was of considerable magnitude, both as regards the volume of work to be done and the amount of money involved. Ihere were no funds at present available for the work.
Mr. Ford added it was hoped in future to have cars built 6in. wider, which would have the effect of lessening the clearance of lft. 3in. at present required by the Public Works Department between the trams and the centre-poles. It would probably take five year 3 to replace the centre-polea by two-span poles, and in the meantime it might be impossible to put wider vehicles on the road. Pie suggested dispensation should be sought from the Government for the running of wider trams, as there would still be ample clearance.
It was decided to make such representations and to defer consideration of the proposal to remove centre-poles, which one member, Mr. A. J. Entrican, championed because of their value in dividing traffic.
