HEALTH OF THE CHILDREN. DOCTOR'S INVESTIGATIONS. "I was astounded at the fine physique and general healthiness of the school children of Queensland, especially those in tbo northern parts of the State," declares the chief medical officer of the Department, of Public Instruction, Dr. St. Vincent Welch, in a recent report. A general survey of tha State is being made by State and Commonwealth authorities, primarily ass to the extent diphtheria is prevalent in Queensland. In a recent tour embracing towns on the coast between Brisbane and Cairns and other regions Dr. Welch closely observed the health and conditions of the children. Ke was very .impressed by. the fine type of f' i'.dren, their robustness, and their grc.it energy—facts which, ho says, give the lie to: any assertion that it is "not possible for white people to live and thrive in the tropics. He declares, however, that it is essential that rtsidents in the tropics should take plenty of exercise.
