CHINESE WORKERS.
restriction on labour. NEW SOUTH WALES MEASURE. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, Nov 13. By means of the Factories and Shops Amendment Bill, -which is at present before the Legislative Assembly, the State Government is> attempting to govern the hours and conditions of Chinese nirniture workers. The Opposition has vainly protested against Chinese not being allowed to work after 5 p.m. or on Saturdays; also against prohibiting Chines* from sleeping on factory premises. The protests are based on the fact that none of these provisions is to apply to Europeans. The Minister of Labour, Mr. J. M. i Baddeley, strongly defended the provisions of the bill. He said he had acted on reports from inspectors. These showed that Chinese were working 12 to 14 hours a day. Cabinetmakers had told him they were harassed- by unfair competition from Chinese.
