AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND CENTRE'S YEAR. NEW SEASON'S PROSPECTS. The annual meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held on Friday evening. Mr. G. R, Metcalfe presided. The annual report recorded a most active season. Unfortunately, with the exception of the carnivals conducted in connection with the visit of the American champions, Messrs. J. V. Scholz and L. Hahn, the centre and metropolitan clubs lost money as a result of their operations. From a competitive point of view, the American carnivals were excellent, while a small profit was made on each. Unfortunately the decision of Mr. R. A. Rose, the New Zealand distance champion and record-breaker, not to compete in Auckland against Mr. Hahn on March 13 greatly disappointed the public, and only £ll7 14s 6d was taken. The events of the year were recorded, the report concluding:—x\.nother effort is being made to bring American athletes to New Zealand, but this centre has asked for better terms than those of last season, and at present the matter is in the air so far as Auckland is concerned. It will be for the incoming centre to go more fully into the Suestion if deemed advisable. Prospects for 36 1926-27 season appear bright, but jt will be necessary for every member of the centre and each of the clubs to work energetically and with enthusiasm if a good and lasting result is to be attained. There is a possibility of two carnivals being held in Auckland at which American athletes will appear, and another when Mr. R. W. Lamb, the Australian champion cyclist, visits the Dominion. The Auckland provincial amateur athletic championships, and the New Zealand championships will be conducted by the centre, if possible, in February, The following officers were elected for tho 1926-27 season:—President, Mr. Wm. Morton; vice-presidents, Messrs. E. S. Kolm and E. Plielan: hon. treasurer. Mr. George R Metcalfe; hon. secretary, Mr. Robert Phillips; auditors, Messrs. P. R. Fraser and T. H. Hanson: starter, Mr. A. R. Elliott; handicapper, Mr. W. Morton; hon. surveyor, Mr. W. A. Gray; dates committee. Messrs. Morton, Phillips and Metcalfe; delegates to N.Z.A.A.A., Messrs. L. A. Tracy and W. V. Morton; ®cord steward, Mr. G. R. Metcalfe Mr. A. Tilley was elected a life member. for affiliation were received from the Henderson and Technical College Old Boys' Clubs. Both applications were approved and ordered to be sent to the New Zealand Council. It was decided to fall in with any reasonable scheme proposed by the Wellington centre to bring the Australian cycling champion, R. W. Lamb to New Zealand. Sub.iect, to the approval of the New Zealand Council, the following dates were approved:—February 5. Auckland provincial championships; February 12, New Zealand amateur athletic championships. Permits were granted as follows son, December 4; Silverdale and Whatawhnta. January 1. The president announced his intention to visit Pukekohe, Whangarei and other places with a view to establishing clubs. Votes of thanks were passed to the outgoing officers, to the press and to friends and enthusiasts who had assisted to entertain visiting athletes during the past season.
