HORSE AND CART TAKEN. SWEDE SENT TO PRISON. Unlawful conversion to his own use'of a horse and cart valued at £ls resulted in Frederick Watterstrand, a Swede, aged 49, being sentenced to seven days' imprisonment by Mr. J. \V. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday. The owner of tha outfit, Stephen Carter, said he, emerged from a building in Federal Street on Friday afternoon to see accused driving his horse and cart up the road. He gave chase and accused told him ho " was just going for a ride and would bring it back again. Accused, who appeared to have been drinking, was a stranger to him. In a statement to the police, accused said he intended to return the vehicle. When complainant caught up he asked accused to come along with him. I thought- he was taking me to have a drink, but he drove me to the police station and gave me in charge," he added. Mr. Poyijton: You have 74 previous convictions. Accused: Yes, I know that, Your Honor, but they are all through drink. I have never done any harm to anyone. A charge that he was found without lawful excuse in Wellesley House, City, on Friday evening, was denied by Andrew Barnard.Shreean, aged 28 (Mr. Sullivan). A female employee at the boarding house said she found accused in a bathroom on the premises and he refused to come out. She .locked one door and had another guarded until a constable arrived- Accused gave his reason for being on the premises and the magistrate dismissed the case. Four young men, whoso names were ordered to be suppressed, were remanded until next Monday on charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl aged 15 years and 10 months, on about May 10. Bail of £SO each was granted. , Theft of two pair of trousers, valued at £1 7s, the property of William Edward Dennison, was denied by Martin aged 47. He was remanded until next Saturday.
