THE WELLINGTON CAMP.
4000 MEN UNDER CANVAS.

Danneyirke, Monday. The territorial encampment at Takapau, which will be the biggest yet held in the Dominion, commenced on Sunday. Men. from all parts of the Wellington defence district, numbering about 4000, arrived by ten special trains, the last contingent from the Main Trunk reaching Takapau late last night. The transport was carried out without a hitch. The men had a depressing introduction to camp, as it was raining practically the whole of Sunday and well into the night. Today the weather is fine. On Friday next the camp will he supplemented by an additional 2000 men,' and Sir lan Hamilton inspects them on May 5 and 6. One of the men engaged in Wellington as camp cook was arrested on arrival, helplessly drunk, and remanded for a week for medical treatment. Liquor is totally prohibited within the precincts of the camp.
