HINDOO REFUGEE ARRESTED
QUESTION OF DEPORTATION.
[FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Sax Francisco, April 1. llau Dtal, a learned Hindoo, who has lectured in American Universities, and I who is conducting from this country a campaign against British rule in India. J was arrested by the immigration authorities of San Francisco last week, and is facing the possibility of deportation. It is admitted that this action was taken at | the request of Great Britain. The incident is being interpreted in papers antagonistic to President Wilson, as another instance of " kowtowing to Britain." Har Dyal denies that he is an anarchist, or that he favours the overthrow of the Go-1 vernment of the United States. The sec- j tion of the immigration law under which '■ ho was arrested reads:"Anarchists or persons who believe in anarchy or the overthrow of the Government of the United States or all government and all' forms of law or the assassination of pub- j lic officials shall be deported." Dyal freely, I admits, however, that ho is a jwlitiial re-1 fugee from India, that he is primarily an ! Indian revolutionist, his object being to; expel the British from India. He is said 1 also to have done what he could to pro- i mote revolution in Russia. His lectures here make it quite plain that in his attitude towards British rule in India, he is a rebel. In the house in which he lived in San Francisco is a printing press, where, with the aid of other Hindoos, he is alleged to have set up articles for distribution among the people of India, developing the spirit of rehellion. Dyal lias lectured at the Leland Stanford University, in California, A significant occurrence throwing on the reasons for his arrest is that at the. trial of several high-caste Hindoos at Delhi (India), charged with sedition, questions were asked with relation to a series of papers bearing the monogram of the Stanford University. Following the usual course in regard to persons arrested in these circumstances, Dyal has been questioned at length, and a transcript of the examination has been sent to Washington to be read by the officials of the State Department, who will determine whether or not the Hindoo shall be deported.
