This medal has been awarded to Detective Thomas Head, Sergeant John Joseph Scanlan, and Sergeant Peter Lynch, of Queensland, for bravery in effecting an arrest in dangerous circumstances.

NEW ZEALANDERS HONOURED

SIR CHARLES C. BOWEN.

Sir Charles C. Bowen, who has occupied the Speaker's chair in the Legislative Council since 1906, is well known as the Father of the Education Act of 1877," which is still in force with its main principles unamended. Born 83 years ago in Ireland, he came to New Zealand with the first party of Canterbury settlers and aided in founding the settlement. With Mr. Crosbie Ward he was joint owner of the Lyttelton Times for some years. He was called to the Upper House in 18.4, and became Minister for Justice in the Vogel Administration. He resigned from the Council and was returned to the House of Representatives for Kaiapoi in 1875, and held portfolios in several Administrations. He was appointed to the Legislative Council a second time in 1891 as a life member. Sir Charles is the author of some poems of considerable merit.

PROFESSOR SHAND.

Professor John Shand, M.A., LL.D., F.P.S., who was born in 1834, was mathematical master at Edinburgh Academy before he became professor of mathematics and national philosophy at Otago University in 1871. Since then he has been prominently associated with primary, secondary, and university education in New Zealand, and he has been a valued member of the New Zealand University Senate for 35 years.
