MERCY UNJUSTIFIED
THE JEANNES SENTENCE. BRUSSELS, April 7. The Advocate-General decided not to recommend Armand Jeannes, the betrayer of Nurse Cavell, to mercy, thus departing from the procedure in all death sentences in Belgium since 1865. Belgium's guillotine has not been used since 1861. It is stored in Mons, where Jeannes was sentenced. j The Press is of opinion that it would be a. connivance at high treason to show mercy to Jeannes.—A. and N.Z.
