INDIA.
We have received filers of the Indian papers up to Mar. 8. From the Hurharu we take the following summary: —The Governor and the Council were busily engaged in working up the arrears of business. Calcutta has been taking a step in the right direction with regard to sanatory measures —a prohibition having been issued by the Lieutenant-Gover-nor of Bengal against bodies being thrown into the Ilooghly, or burned on its banks. The order was a most necessary one tor the health of the community, but a sect, ot the Hindus are endeavoring to raise a cry that the new Governor General is attempting to tamper with their religion. The Government and the Europeans wish the present burning ghats removed, as owing to their proximity to the town, they are dangerous nuisances. This the representatives of Hindu opinion wish to resist. The matter has been referred to a mixed Committee of the Justices, consisting of European and native gentlemen. The establishment of a people s park is being keenly agitated in Calcutta, and it is to be hoped that this desirable object will soon be attained. The cholera still continues to make fearful ravages amongs the natives, and several cases have occurred amongst the European shipping. The weather is, however, cooler, and it is expecte that the malady will soon show signs ot
batement. Money remains very light, notwithstanding the large supplies received by the English steamers, lhe demand both in the North-West Provinces and in Calcutta, has been larger than usual. No chauge has i pen made by the directors of the Bank of -Bengal in the rates of discount and interest. The°demand for gold and silver continues steady, and prices are well maintained.
