TO THE ELECTORS OF THE AKAROA DISTRICT. GENTLEMEN,— At the approaching Election I intend to offer myself as a candidate for the seat in the General Assembly which it is your commission to fill ■. # „ My opinion on several of the principal questions to be considered during the coming session I take this opportunity of briefly setting before you. . I am in favour of a vigorous prosecution ot the War,'at any cost, until the Maories acknowledge our Gracious Queen's sovereignty over these Islands; indeed, until by unconditional surrender the blessings of peace may be secured to us for time to "With reference to the New Provinces Act,! set myself in toto against any further disintegration of the' original provinces, nor will I vote for any modification of it, believing in the policy of fosterjn°' as far as is practicable common interests, and, by°preserving the unity of the colony, introducing and supporting the English character of our institutions. Local interests and prejudices unavoidably connected with petty local governments are, I am convinced, prejudicial to the development of the resources of the country. I will support such a financial system as shall preserve with the-ntmost jealousy to each Province its own revenues;"rat the same time, I strongly feel the necessity for the immediate introduction of some measures to prevent the present absolute disposal of the Public Monies by the Superintendents and Executive Councils of the various Provinces. ; ■'■/■ In referring you to my career in the Provincial Council of Canterbury as one of your Representatives, I believe I am entitled to claim, from you an avowal that I have diligently endeavoured to further your interests, and at the same time never swerved from the principles acknowledged by me, either for the advancement of any private ends, by the persuasion of those in power, or by the fear of being found in a minority. I remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, AUGUSTUS EDWARD WHITE. Akaroa, Jan. 24,1860. ": TO THE ELECTORS OF THE HEATHCOTE DISTRICT. GENTLEMEN,— The Writs for the Election of new members for the General Assembly having arrived from the seat of Government, I have the honor tb offer myself as a candidate for your suffrages. In the event of your choice falling upon me, my best endeavours will be given to represent the general interests of New Zealand, and to watch over those of our own province. I am of opinion with regard to the native disturbances that they must be put down with a firm hand, and as speedily as possible. ■ The New Provinces Act requires either repeal or material alteration. Upon the various other probable topics of the coming session, I shall be anxious to carefully inform myself, and if elected, vote consistently with the common welfare.
