HAWERA HOSPITAL BOARD

TO-DAY'S A EETING

. The.Hawera Hospital Board met today, when there were present—Messrs G. W. Tayier (chairman), E. B. Bates, J. Marx, C. Hawken, T. Winks, W. Goodland, T. A. Bridge, and C. E. Parririgton (secretary). Messrs J. Phillips and W. T. Wells were granted -leave of absence. > .

Inspector Gray reported that one case of phthisis and one of scarlet fever were removed to hospital from Hawera borough, while one case of scarlet fever was notified in Hawera.. county. One case of suspected typhoid fever was removed to hospital from Manaia. Acting under instructions from the district health officer, five brands of butter and two brands of tea were weighed in Hawera., while three brands of butter and one brand of tea were weighed at Eltham.

Mr Goodland remarked that the inspector did not say whether the weights were satisfactory or otherwise. The Chairman said he would bring the matter under 'the notice of the, inspector. It would be satisfactory to "the Board to know if the weights were correct.

Members remarked that scarlet fever seemed to be still "prevalent in parts of the Board's district.

A long circular was received from the Palmerstou North Hospital Board, pointing out that since the passing of the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act there had been constant trouble and friction between different boards as to maintenance charges for cases treated when the patients had come from another district, and suggesting an alteration in the Act, so as to overcome this difficulty. On the motion of Messrs Marx and Goodland, it was decided to refer the circular to the new Board to deal with. A circular was received from the In-soector-General of Hospitals, stating that in cases where the Board found it rwcessary to grant relief to the family of a_ prisoner of war detained in the Dominion, and if it was proved that relief had been rendered necessary by reason of the detention of a. prisoner, the Government would pay half of the relief so afforded.

A resident of Eltham, a reservist in the British Army, had been summoned to rejoin the'colors, and he had sailed for the front. The general feeling wr«s that th<? nrobatioriers were underpaid, and Mr Marx gave notice of motion to readjust the salaries of the probationers, and a special meeting c£ the Board will he held to consider it.

A committee, consisting of Messrs Bates, Hawken, Winks, and the secretory, was appointed to arrange for the official opening of the new children's wards.

The Chairman, Messrs Bates and Bridge, were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. , The Bo^rd rose at one o'clock.
