THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1895. MOVING ONWARD.

Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co. and Messrs Hancock and Co., of Auckland, may bo congratulated on the fill completion of " an enterprise of great pith and moment," so far as the future of Rotorua is concerned. In providing what may be termed the metropolis of the Hot Springs district with an imposing pile of buildings,

whicli 'would grace those cities that point with pride to their spejiinens of stately architecture, these firms have placed on indubitable record their entire confidence in tho future prosperity of the town. It is therefore only becoming that they should have the measure of praise which is their due, combined with the fervent hope that they will find the extensive enterprise on whicli they have embarked fanned by the favouring breezes of success. And while congratulating the owners of the Grand Hotel on the completion and opening of the building, those who have cast in their lot with the fortunes of Eotorua have every reason to congratulate themselves, for they may rest assured that before so comprehensive a scheme' was initiated the probabilities of the future of the town its pros and cons—were carefully balanced and accurately gauged. It wili be fortunate indeed for this place if the enterprise shown by theso business firms will lead to the shaking off of that apathetic feeling which has been engendered by the habit of looking to the Government for everything. Oil the same principle that " Heaven helps those who help themselves" it is quite possible that a much larger amount of consideration might be show n for the necessities of the place, in the way of sanitation, water supply bath accommodation and so on, if greater exertion were evinced locally. It is a sorry situation for a community to be in, waiting, like Micawber, "for Something to turn up.' It is high time, and there is ample opportunity, to emerge from our present nrtus-eat-ing condition and as the poet puts rt " rise on stepping stones From our dead selves to higher things." There is no reason to the contrai'y why this town should not become in the near futuro as popular a health resort as any of the Continental spas Writing from W iesbnden recently a correspondent draws a picture of that city, with its Ferupulously (dean asphalte pavements, its hotels in abundance of every kind and class, its concerts in the Kurhaus or Sanatorium, its reading, chess, music and dancing rooms, its lawn tennis grounds, bcautifulgardens, parks and covered walks. And yet Wiesbaden, or any other Continental spa, has not one-tenth part of the advantages which Eotorua has had bestowed upon it, by Nature. It is computed that 100,000 visitors flock to Wio>baden annually for thy " cure " alone. But theso are not the only visitors. Mothers with marriageable daughters see the udvantago of chaperoning their girls to a place where desirable husbands nay be secured, and specialists of the highest repute in the medical and surgical world attract patients from all poiuts of the compass. Such are a few of the possibilities in regard to Eotorua.
