TERRIBLE END TO A CHRISTMAS GATHERING.
Details have boon received recently of a Bhodring affair which occurred at Silver Lake, in Oregon State on Christmas Eve. There was a large gathering of people in the settlement in a hall used ordinarily for storoage purposes. They -were celebrating the occasion by feasting and dancing, and during the proceedings a lamp was overturned, and set firo to the flooring. A panic immediately ensued among the crowd. A rush was made for tho door. The exit, however, was so small that tho people became jammed in tho doorway. A largo number of thoso in the building climbed to tho higher windows, and jumped out, All those who survived escaped in this way, but sixteen were severely injured in the jumping, five subsecjiicntly dying of their wounds. When the ruins were searched after the fire had been extinguished the charred corpses of 40 persons were discovered.
