Empire Minstrels. — The company of Empire Minstrels which arrivecLin Napier a few days ago, gave their first entertainment on Saturday night last, in the Masonic Hall. - The -attendance was not bad, though doubtless a better house might have been expected. As to the performances we may say that they seemed to give genera satisfaction. An entirechange"'of 'programme is announced for this and tomorrow evenings.
j Heavy Floods and Loss of Life on the West Coast.— We take the following from the West-Goast-Times; 19th April: —“ The accounts that reached us last night tell the same tale of floods and impassable rivers. Tho Tereraakau and Aranura were reported as exceedingly high, and the Grey coach" was,- therefore, not despatched—for although the latter stream could have been punted over, the_former was in too dangerous a state for even a whaleboat to have crossed it. A similar condition of affairs existed south of Hokitika—the-Boss coach being “stuck up”" on the South Spit for two days, and at the other end of the line the Ross mailm an was. compelled to delay his departure for twenty-four hours until the Totara river had subsided a little. At 1 p.m; yesterday he left, rand managed to reach thebeach safely, arid eventually Hokitika. We regret to say the flood has been attended byat least one fatai accident, as an unfortunate man was- drowned -festerday whilst attempting to ford the Totara on foot, just wheredt joins with Donnelly’s creek. Several persons saw him washed away,, but . were unable to render the'filightest assistance,jaind the poor fellpw perished. The mailman passed by shortly after, and! being.made aware of,.the ; catastrophe; searched for the body as Kejburnbyed towards the sea-beach, but-oould see nothing of it.” ' ; .. - ;
