COLONEL HUGHES ASKED TO
STAND.
It has been reported for some little lime that the Hon. A. h. Herdman is shortly to retire from active participation in politics in order to take a seat mi the Supreme Court Bench, to be 4 rendered vacant by the retirement ol Sir John Denniston. The reports have tnous-ed some interest in the question of who is to be member' for Wellington North after Mr. Herdman retires. Uout.-Colonel .r. Gethin Hughes, CM. »;., D.5.0., is slated to be a possible ,-a adulate, though Colonel Hughes has Tint yet made up his mind on the mutter. When the National Government was formed it was arranged that no by••lei^ion should be contested on party lines, that the head of the party to which the retiring member belonged -hould have the right to nominate the " .findidate who- should have the "support of the Government. If this pact is tii be observed in regard to Welling--1011 North, the choice of a candidate rests with Mr. Massey.
