[Lord Wolseley lias had a great career as a soldier and statesman. He served in the Burmese War, in the Crimea (with great honour, and was severely wounded), at Lucknow. During the war with the Ashantees, he received the thanks of Parliament and a grant of £25,000 for "courage, energy, and perseverance," the freedom of the city of London, and a sword of the value of 100 guineas. He was appointed Governor of Natal in 1879, and in 1882 was Commander-in-Chief of an expeditionary force to Egypt (received the thanks of Parliament, was raised to the Peerage ' and made a grant of £30.000). After his Gordon Relief Expedition. 1884-5, he was raised to the Viscountcy.
