A ROAD CONTEST.

Local bodies will he interested in a comparison of the methods and results ■of road-making indulged in just now by two local bodies on arterial roads loading to Feilding. We refer to the Clieltenham-Kimloltoii j-oad and the Cnlyton-Taomii road. Both roads are being "mended." Tho Colvton road is in splendid condition the "day after the metal is put down notwithstanding the absence 1 of rain to assist the road-rolled, while the Kimbokon road days after the metal is spread is a terror to vehicular traffic and likely to be so for months to come. The Oroua Cuhty's road-roller first scarifies tho road, metal is spread on the bed thus made, and the, road-roller completes a very good job. The Kiwitea Cbunty Council adopts tho obsolete method of putting loose metal on a hard surface and expecting the traffic to wear it down or kick" the boulders off. AYe understand that the Oroua County Council is willing to let other local bodies have the roller at a very moderate price, viz., £2 10s per day. and it seems a. pity that the enterprise shown in. acquiring it is not more adequately recognised by those having roads to mend.
