A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE
Wellington, April 4. A. faro broke out this morning in the premises in Victoria street occupied by tho Welsbach Light Co as a manufactory and by the Union o.b. bo. as a stores department. I'rvemen climbed through a thick cloud of blinding smoke. Much damage was done, including tho destruction of apppi-oximately a quarter of a million, mantle boxes. The building was insured for £5000 in the Queensland office and the Welsbach stock for £70013. of which the State office covers £5000 and the Royal .-Exchange £2000. The Union 00. s stores were insured for £4000 in Various offices. HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. ~ .. Napier, April 4. Kail way t-rnific has beea exceptionally heavy for Easter. The outward bound express to-day was crowded wlien it lefty notwithstanding the fact that there were no passengers carried ■for stations ])etwoen Napier and Woodville. THE-BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. Hamilton, April 4. oome tune ago tho Board of Governors, of the Hamilton High School vetoed a proposal that the headmaster should, open the school with the Lord's Prayer and a passage from the Bible. At yesterday's meeting of the Board the motion to rescind tho resolution caused a wordy • war, but tho motion was carried oil vote of the chairman. Ihe 'headmaster was instructed to exempt'children .whose parents made conscientious .objections.
