BLACK ACE GOOD

BARON BOLD UNLUCKY

(Special to "The Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. Black Ace, winner of the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie last week, cost 700 guineas as a yearling, and judging by the manner in which he scored he will be difficult to beat again next time out. He may have his next appearance in the Foal Stakes on Boxihg Day.

Phaleron Sign was paid up for in the Wellington Guineas, although after a' very moderate showing at Ellerslie last week in this class she can hardly be expected to win. .However, her track efforts have-been quite good and she may make amends. . v

Lightfair was not prominent early in the hurdles contest at Eilerslie, but ran up handy crossing the top, only for a faulty jump, to send him back, and he disappeared in the concluding stages. ' Nevertheless, for a first appearance at Ellerslie he gave quite a promising display. Baron Bold gave a thrilling display of jumping while leading the field in the Onehunga Steeplechase at Ellerslie. He tore away from the field in great style and fenced beautifully, but tired on the hill the second time. Rival joined him at the penultimate obstacle, but Baron Bold was still holding a slight advantage at the last obstacle, where he crashed heavily. Over the flat country at Cambridge next Monday Baron Bold may turn the tables on Rival. : .

There was good support for Kilmanagh in the cross-country event at Ellerslie, but she fenced indifferently and was never able to get in a winning position. The Hastings jumper may do better next time she visits Auckland headquarters, for experience over both the hurdles and steeplechase course is a big asset. Marble Fox gave a very fine showing in the Mitchelsori Cup, in which she was the only runner in the closing stages to threaten danger to Lou Rosa. This mare was sold at auction a few hours earlier for 850 guineas and the enterprise of her buyer in- going to this figure was rewarded with a £300 stake for second. If she runs up to this f6rm Marble Fox should go close to winning the principal handicap at the Waikato Hunt fixture on Labour Day. ...-..- .

Tutere was handy to the leaders at the home turn in the Shorts Handicap at Ellerslie, and his failure.-to make a showing in the run in was very disappointing to those who expected him to be difficult to beat after his improving form at Paeroa. Tutere is engaged over seven furlongs at Cambridge and may do better there.

Hippodrome, purchased under the hammer at Hamilton by a Waikato sportsman, was produced in a hack race at Ellerslie and was prominent to the straight, but petered out. He had not done a great deal of fast work, and it may not be difficult to place him to advantage in the north.
