AXIS AIR LOSSES
4500 IN NINE MONTHS
LONDON, August 24
Figures given at Allied headquarters show that 4500 Axis aircraft have been destroyed since the Allies landed in North Africa last November. This does not include planes destroyed on the ground, except those that fell into our hands on captured airfields.
In just over nine months, 2800 Axis aircraft were shot down in combat and 1700 were found on airfields in Tunisia, Pantelleria, and Sicily. In the same period North African aircraft sank 179 ships totalling 670,000 tons.
