MOTOR VEHICLES
LICENCE FEES
REDUCTION PROBABLE
(0.C.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Hopes held by motorists throughout New Zealand that, in view of the-uncertainty of future petrol supplies, they may escape some of the annual licensing, registration, and third-party insurance charges during the coming year, are likely to be realised.
Although no official announcement has been made, it is possible that the cost of relicensing and third-party insurance may be reduced by about £1, for the 1942-43 year, while it has already been stated th:t no new numberplates will be issued.
The present motor registration year extends to June 30, instead- of the end of May, and last year licence fees and the cost of driving licences were proportionately increased to cover the 13 months. For the 12 months from July 1 this year onward, however, it is confidently expected that there will be a substantial reduction.
The belief is held that, instead of being something over £3, the annual cost of registration and third-party insurance combined may be reduced by about one-third, to a little over £2. The move is due to the fact that, with less petrol available, motorists are not only obtaining less use from their vehicles, but.are also in less danger of being involved in accidents. NO NEW ISSUE OF COUPONS. I When motor vehicles were relicensed last year a new sheet of petrol coupons was supplied and the old coupons became useless. This year the unused coupons are to be retained by their owners, but they will not be valid after the end of June unless they have been date-stamped. When a car is being relicensed the coupons must be taken to the office for stamping. Petrol resellers will be instructed not to accept unstamped coupons.
