MURITAI CLUB
The Muritai- Yacht Club's 1939-40 season was1 officially opened on Sunday, October 29, by the, club patron, Mr. •E: Wise, "Mayor of Eastbourne. Mr. Wise remarked that yachting should be fostered, especially in time of war. Many yachtsmen during 1914-18 were called up by the Naval Reserve for defence of their country. The Royal Port Nicholson Club, Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club, and the Worser Bay Boating Club were represented by their respective members at the opening. A race was sailed to commemorate opening day over a windward and leeward course, twelve boats participatipg. The Viking, skippei-ed by P. Christensen, sailed a great race and never looked like being beaten, finally finishing nearly two minutes ahead of ] the Aloha. It was a day out for Worser Bay, however, as on corrected time their boats finished first, second, and third respectively.
The Aurora has a fine new sail, and when it is flown in correctly her skipper, L. Mac Donald, expects to do well. R. Egley caught his first catch for the season when he dropped the spinnaker on the Pegaway when she was in a prominent position. The Waitui was unlucky in breaking a lashing just before the start, thus making her a few minutes late in crossing the line.
F. Benson has the Lonesome in facing trim this season, and will be hard competition. ■
