"PRE-CENTENNIAL"

TRAVEL CLUB PARTY

Whether the party held by the Wellington' Travel Club at the Majestic Cabaret last night was intended as a "curtain-raiser" to the club's Centennial celebrations or whether the name "pre-Centennial party" merely indicated its proximity to' an important event in the history of New Zealand, was not quite clear, but, in any case, it was a very successful party. There was a large attendance. Flags and flowers decorated the cabaret and gave it a festive appearance, and the first half of the programme was occupied with excellent floor shows and songs by Mr. Herbert F. Wood.

The guests were received in the foyer by the official hostesses, Mrs. E. Ransom Myers, Mrs. T. M. Donovan, and Miss N. E. Donovan (secretary), and the chairman, Mr. H. F. Wood, made a speech of welcome and at the same time appealed to the members for reading matter for the troops. The "floor shows" included several ballets. Miss Mildred Harris presented three ballets in costume, "The Polka," "A Waltz," and "The Mazurka," and Miss Marjorie Newport presented about 20 of her boy and girl pupils in a delightful dancing version of "The Story of Cinderella." Atmosphere was ingeniously lent to the latter number by a big fireplace which stood in front of the' orchestral dais, and which was turned round by two small "fairies" halfway through the ballet and showed a palace on its reverse side.

The latest dance craze "Boomps-a-Daisy" was demonstrated by Miss Mildred Harris and Mr. Diedrick, and Miss Marjorie Newport presented Miss *Helen. Smith and Mr. Jack Blake in eccentric dances in costume. A series of coloured spotlights supplied special lighting for the ballets, and the accompanists were Miss Dorothy Spinks and Mrs. Kirk-Burnnand.

After the serving of supper the guests danced to the music of the cabaret swing band.
