NUFFIELD RETIRED

According to a Melbourne report, Mr. C. B. Kellow has finally decided definitely to retire last season's dual Derby winner Nuffield to the stud. It was hoped tb train him again this season after a light term at the stud, but he has become very unruly in the paddock, as others of the Heroic breed have done in the past, and it is feared that more racing might make him even worse and he might do himself some harm.

Nuffield has great possibilities as a sire. He is practically a blood brother to Hall Mark, whom he will join at Tarwyn Park Stud, and, like him, was a high-class racehorse. He raced for less than two seasons, as he was out of action during the latter half of last season, but he started in fourteen races for eight firsts, one second, one third, and four times unplaced. His stakewinnings amounted to £17,110, and the races he won included the Maribyrnong Plate, V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, Caulfield Guineas, A.J.C. Derby, and Victoria Derby. It is a great record, but if he had been blessed with the same temperament as Hall Mark it would have been a much better one. His trainer, J. Holt, will always maintain that the best was never seen of him on the race tracks.
