PRISONERS SENTENCED,

DUNEDIN, This Day.
For the first time in 21 years there were no cases for trial at the Supreme Court. The following prisoners were sentenced by his Honour Mr. Justice. Ostler:—-Francis Cleaver Matthews (33), forgery and theft, ono gear's reformative; Henry Thomas Carstairs, forgery, probation for two years, sub-' ject to a prohibition order, payment of costs and of £10 secured by the • forgery, payment to be within 'six months; John Albert Arthur and , Charles-John Smith,, both youths, breaking and entering and theft from a shop, Arthur two years' Borstal and Smith two years' probation; Malcolm McGreg&r (35), breaking and entering and theft, two years' probation, the accused to prohibit himself' and re- , turn money taken. Counsel in McGregor's case said that' the crime arose from a' sudden impulse. The prisoner had spent a considerable part of his wages in drink, ■ and, fearing to face his wife, took the money from the shop to replace the sum spent
