"HAPPY HUNDRED" CLUB

The "Happy Hundred" Club opened its 1939 season last week with a dance in the comfortable R.S.A. club rooms. The guests were received by the president, Mr. N. T. Gillespie, and Mrs. Gillespie, who was dressed in a smart dinner gown of black heavy crepe and a matching bolero jacket finished with intertwined scroll designs in gold. The polished parquet floor was cleared for dancing, and the room was artistically decorated with gleaming copper bowls of Iceland poppies and sprays of tawny autumn foliage. An excellent orchestra played throughout the evening. In the intervals between dances the big open fireplace filled with blazing logs was a popular rendezvous for groups of friends. "A Hand of Cards." In furtherance of a Queen Carnival campaign for the purpose of raising funds to provide nev instruments for the Lower Hutt Municipal Band in time for the Centennial, Mrs. John Weir held a very successful card party at her residence in Park Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. The large recep-i tion room with its cheery fires and! warmly-toned decorations of Chinese-j red chrysanthemums made a cosy and' attractive retreat from the chilly out! of doors, and a delicious buffet tea provided by the ladies of the committee added |o the comfort of the afternoon. ' * . The Northern Queen, Miss Flora Ferretti, -was the guest of honour, and those present included Mesdames Ray Brown, Puccini, L. Colson. I. Wilson. A. Cooley, B. Foster, and Alex. Weir;; Misses Weir and D. Jenkins. The, prize-winners were Mesdames Colson] and Foster, and a competition was won, by Mrs. John Weir. For the Southern "Queen." A "500" card tournament was, also held last week in aid of the Southern Queen in the Municipal Band's District Queen Contest, Miss Rona Burton. The tournament took place in the Railway Workshops' social hall. The unpleasant weather affected the attendance,, but those who braved the elements had a very pleasant evening. It is the intention >f the Southern Queen committee to hold a card tournament every Thursday evening. Plunket Bridge Evening. On the evening following the annual meeting of the Lower Hutt branch of the Plunket Society .a most successful bridge party was organised by members of the committee and held in the attractive Plunket rooms in Riddiford Park. The quartet of hostesses who were responsible for all the arrangements were the president, Mrs. J. W. Andrew's (who wore a model gown of black* chiffon velvet), Mrs. F. Lonsdale (black floral georgette patterned in dusky pink), Mrs. A. N. Toswill (black cloque), and Mrs. E. Cameron (black lace with a cluster of scarlet flowers at the corsage). African marigolds in shallow bowls formed the decoration in the card room, and also in the adjoining supper roon;, where savouries were served with piping hot coffee. Among the players were.. Campaign Commenced. The East queen carnival committee, set up to further the interests of Miss Joy August, Eastern queen in the Lower Hutt Municipal Bands District Queen Contest, commenced its campaign on Saturday evening with a * 500 card tourney in the Waterloo School. The room was comfortably heated, an£ music from a radio helped to make the evening pass very pleasantly. Those present thoroughly enjoyed the games. During the evening Mr. Fred Ryan, chainhan of the committee, introduced Miss August, who was accorded a hearty reception. A point often overlooked is to make the buttonholes of children's clothing i perpendicular. An "up-and-down" butI tonhole will take the weight better than the horizontal one.
