THEFT OF RADIO SET
MAN SENT. TO PRISON
Pleading guilty to the theft of a radio set valued at £17, William John Herbert Fraser, a painter, 49, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today.
Sub-Inspector D. A. McLean said that the theft was a mean one, as the radio was taken from a house where the defendant was living during the absence of the owner. The defendant went about disposing of it in a systematic way. He obtained a certificate from the agents to say that the set had been fully paid for, and then produced the certificate to a pawnbroker. He received £3 for the set, £2 of which he spent oh liquor, according to his own story.
The accused also pleaded guilty to riding on a train without paying his fare. He got on the train at Ohakune, said that he had lost his wallet, and promised to pay on getting to Wellington.
On the first charge he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, and on the second he was ordered to pay the fare.
