RACING STARTS

HERETAUNGA CLUB

The first race of the Heretaunga Boating Club's season was a sweepstake handicap last Sunday afternoon. Light to moderate conditions prevailed. There were ten starters and the Tornado, sailed by Cliff Stutter, had an easy win. The boats started to a. Mark Foy system, the limit boat, the Waitui, being the only Takapuna. It had ten minutes' handicap and was followed by the Lyric and the Ant's Pants, .with four minutes. All other boats x were off scratch.

.The course was up and down the beach, out through the "Gap" (Leper Island), back to a buoy off the clubhouse, and up and down the beach for a second finishing between the clubhouse and the buoy.

C. Stutter (Tornado) had no difficulty

in overtaking and passing the limit boats within half a mile of the start, and he won easily by four minutes.

S. Pyne's new boat, the Cygnet, sailed particularly well. It is a very smart craft, having a beautifully finished hull with all metal parts plated. The biggest surprise was the appearance of K. Maxwell's boat, the Evelyn. It has taken two years to build, and great things are expected of it. H. Baggett also has a fine-looking craft in the Mokihinui. The Ant's Pants is shaping well and will perform more than creditably this season.. H. Woods, in the Elite, with his new mainsheet hand, is expected to put up a good showing. A. Harvey, with the Idle Along,,sailed a good race, although R. Abbott caught this first haul of fisa for the season with his spinnaker.

The Unique and the Lyric, sailed by McKay and N. Woods respectively, will probably put up better showings as the season continues.

Next Saturday and Sunday the dub will hold the first series of trials for the Idle Alongs.
