BRITISH ACTIVITY.

LONDON, July 14.
The gross tonnage of merchantmen building in Britain at the ena of the June quarter was 1,199,973, the highest for seven years. Britain is building 41.6 per cent, of world tonnage under construction, compared with 50 per cent, in 1929, but a disappointing feature of the returns is the continued dearth of foreign orders.
Lord Craigmyle, chairman of the P. and O. Company, and Sir Edward Beatty, chairman of Canadian Pacific Steamships, Ltd., issued a joint statement as follows:—"Negotiations continue to progress for the completion of an agreement to improve the Pacific steamship service. The issue to selected shipbuilders of plans and specifications for two new ships and the inviting of tenders-for them forms a routine part of the negotiations proceeding between interested Governments and the Can-adian-Australasian Line. There is a possibility of some unavoidable delay on account of the necessary departure of the Dominion Ministers from England prior to the completion of the agreement." "
