HUTT RIVER BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Hutt River • Board was held yesterday. Present: Mr. •J. Mitchell (chairman), Mr. J. Brasell, and Dr. B. J. Dudley.
The question of allowing a soapmaking firm to drain into the mouth of the river was left in the hands of the chairman and Dr. Dudley, after consultation with the board's engineer. Dr. Dudley raised the question of the effect of soap solution on the spawn of whitebait and on trout.
The board's engineer, Mr. H. Sladden, reported that there had been no freshes of any consequence during the past month. The channel at Page's continued to develop satisfactorily as a result of the weir constructed last April. The reclamation works had had a 'beneficial effect in respect to .the erosion that had been slowly taking place by wave action on the left bank above the pipe bridge. As a result the range of the waves in southerly storms appeared to be less and a sloping shoulder to the bank was developing. Some netted stone spurs were about to be constructed here, and with these it was contemplated that, erosion would be completely arrested on this section.
