BOOKS IN RUSSIA
Russia, that- land of large areas, is also a land of large book editions: and the editions are growing. Last year De,tizdat, the Children's Publishing House in the U.S.S.R., issued 36,000,000 books, which was twice as many as in 1935. This year its publication of children's books, will run into 70,000,000 copies. No book is published by Detizdat in an edition of less than 25 000 copies. The .majority of titles is issued in editions of 50,000 to 100,000.
Soviet youngsters are now reading Grimm's and Hans Andersen's fairy tales by the million. And the "Uncle Remus" stories of America's Joel Chandler Harris are in great demand. This year the children are looking forward to meeting "Winnie the Pooh," which Detizdat is'to publish.
