REGENT WINNERS

WINTER PROSPECTS

BREEDING OF HANLON

Hanlon, a winner at Oamaru on Thursday, is from the Markhope— Princess Mosca mare, Dancing Days, a very consistent performer for Mr. Theo Russell, some years ago. She won several useful handicaps and proved a game mure, but her stud career; was an unfortunate : one. She produced to Last Dart in 1930 Last Dance, who has been a failure on. the racecourse,, and in 1932 she foaled Hanlon, whose best effort was his Oamaru one, though he has won a race or two at the smaller meetings in the 'Otago district. Hanlon is by Wise Councillor from Ad-judge-7-Beneflcence, the sire being rated as a half bred, owing to lack of information . about his dam. Adjudge sired a good money-winner in Adjutor, who in Mr. C. Hazlett's colours was to the fore: as a hurdler in the south for many years. Dancing Days foaled to -Valkyrian in 1933, but died ; the: same year. Hanlon may not be a great success on the flat, but may later be' tried as a jumper, in which department he should prove useful. Looked Form Horse. Sporting Song, the . winner of the Mangatera Steeplechase at Woodville yesterday, < opened his two-year-old career promisingly enough by running second to Whenuakura in the 1933 Avondale Stakes,' but was not a success and last season was tried as "a jumper. The Hunting Song gelding's first success in this department was in phe Panmure Hurdles on the middle day of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting, this being achieved after a number of failures; Sporting Song scored a narrow: win at the Feilding Meeting in March in the Kimbolton Hurdles, and on that form looked-the outstanding prospect for yesterday's race at Woodville. Like most of the other Hunting Songs tried over hurdles, Sporting Song has showed considerable aptitude for the job,: and may prove a useful winner in the next few months, there being plenty of rich stakes to be1 picked up. . , NNewcomers at Oamaru. Some newcomers were seen out in the Trial Stakes, the opening event at Oamaru on Thursday, among them being: Adina, a three-year-old gelding by Rosenor from Killorna, by Archery — Killala, by Kilbroney. Killala is also the dam of Good as Gold'and Moneyeran; Calandra, by Shambles from Glenledi, by Glenculloch-Ladv Dundas, by Perkin Warbeck 11, by St. George-^Hammock. Glenledi- is the dam of ■Power and Lady Dundas is the dam of Afton Loch, the dam or Sunny iLoch,-who won the Winter Cup of 1923 and the Thompson Handicap of 1924; s Rose Bumey ris a four-year-old filly'by Standard -Rose (brother to Osculate) from Margaret Burney; and Scrap is a five-year-old, gelding by Cockpit■■ from Enmity, by Horn from Ennea, by Demosthenes—KUworth, by Gold Reef. Arctic King's Qualifications. Although Mandamus was preferred to Arc?icKing in the betting on he Dannevirke Handicap yesterday, the Rabbi gelding really looked the form horse He finished behind Friesland and Chief ganger in the Thompson Handicap, and though he fai cdl two days later at Trentham and fell at his next start, which was at the C.J.u Easter Meeting, he finished a good second to WilUe Win in the .Great Autumn. Judging by the entnes received for some of the meetings, useful handicap horses are not in too plentiful supply and Arctic King should prove a first-class winter prospect. Entered for N.Z. Cup. Captain Furst, the Rakaiatai Maiden winner at Woodville, was honoured with a nomination for the last New Zealand Cup, and though his success ylsterday was his first, the Victory was well anticipated. He is by Arausio from Huiarau, being from the same dam as the disappointing Werohia. Huiarau was bred by Mr. G. c;. Ormond in 1923, but was not raced. Captain Furst is trained by his owner, Mr. H. Neagle, at Greenmeadows.
