Farewell to Secretary.

Miss C. E. Kirk. J.P.. was entertained at a pleasant party,yesterday afternoam on the occasion of her retiring from the position of secretary of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, which she has held for the past fifteen years. Other societies to .which Miss Kirk has _belonged and worked were represented, including the National Council of Women, (of which she is Dominion president), the Y.W.C.A;, the Trained Nurses' Association, After-care Society. W.D.F.U.. Free Kindergarten Association, and Social Progress Movement. The party took place :in the New Zealand Educational Institute room; and Mrs. Dallard (vice-president of the Protection Society) spoke of the valuable work done by Miss Kirk, and then asked Mrs. Peter Fraser to speak. Tributes were paid. by these ladies to the fine work done, and then Mrs. Sprott (a former president) presented Miss Kirk with a bouquet of roses and a book on behalf of the members, and spoke in high praise of her culture, her sympathy and understanding in her work. Her knowledge oflaw also had been a great asset,to the society, and had helped much ..in th-?.way in-which she, had carried put her duties. ' ■/ ■? •;,'.. Miss Kirk, in reply, expressed her appreciation of the kindness of her friends and colleagues, and also for the tributes paid to her by the N.C.W. Bridge Afternoon. •.'.' Mrs. W. Parkin, ,528 Evans Bay Road; entertained a number'of friends recently,: when bridge was. played, and a dainty tea was served. Among those present were Mesdames Drake, Elliot, Bell...Godfrey, Hawken. Usher,' Mitchell'^), Browne,' Rutherford, Spiers, Guthrie. Ponder, G. Parkin. Hanson, Marsden, Anderson. King,. Southwick, Rough. The trophies (presented by the hostess) were won', by Mesdames Anderson and Elliot. The proceeds ■were in. aid of the V.M.C.A. ■..";. Brooklyn Kindergarten. TJie Brooklyn Kindergarten committee held; the first meeting recently.with a good attendance. Officers elected were as follows:—President, Mrs. A. Cunniffe: secretary. . Mrs. T. Kerr; treasurer,,, Mrs. .: Spolsky. -, Arrangements.'were made for numerous functions,to ,be held in the forthcoming year, and with the' help of local, friends the committee will be able to reopen the. school in a new building. The Coronation dance to be held promises to give a pood opening to start the building fund. Ethical Union. There was a crowded attendance at the women's group of the Ethical Union to hear' Miss Frayne, M.A., of Wellington, speak .on "Life in the Antipodes.". Her graphic and interesting account of the scenery and the natural phenomena of.. her country, with its hot springs and natural beauty, was thrilling-.
