AMY JOHNSON IS WELL

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, November 21. As the Wingatui-trained gallopers Sungem, Oliver, Hula Belle, Grand Finale, Amy Johnson, Salmo Salar, Toreador, Gold Fox, and Last Link have accepted for the Southland Racing Club's Meeting, proceedings on the Wingatui track this morning were watched with more interest than usual. Those with engagements on Saturday, galloped on the extreme outside of the' course proper, where the going was good.

The first worker, Hula Belle, went six furlongs without being iinduly called on, in a pleasing manner, running the last five in Imin 9sec. She is well at present and should run prominently in the open sprint.

The Southland Cup Handicap candidates, Amy Johnson, Salmo Salar, and Grand Finale, began a mile task. The first-named again showed that she has taken a fresh lease of life by collaring Grand Finale just when he appeared to be winning the gallop and succeeding by a head, going away, from Salmo Salar, who also cut Grand Finale down. They covered the last seven furlongs in Imin 36 3-ssec. The highweight acceptors Sungem and Oliver traversed a mile, at the end of which the former drew clean away. The journey took Imin 54 3-5 sec, the last half-mile being run in 58 sec. The gallop appeared to be an ordinary one, but Sungem's easy triumph may have something to suggest. The final gallop for Toreador and Last Link, with Worship as a mate, was an essay over six furlongs. Worship led the other pair right round to the straight but Toreador and Last Link soon passed him, with Toreador beating Last Link comfortably in Imin 23sec. The last five furlongs were run in Imin lOsec and the concluding four in 57sec. Toreador went well.

Gold Fox, who strips very well at present, was sprinted down the straight.

The North Islander Pladie has a sister in F. Shaw's stable at Wingatui in Wyn, and when sent with Vantoon over half a mile this morning was not doing her best to hold her companion in just under 51sec, this gallop being on the- inside grass, where it was faster. Vantoon was ridden out.

Since the Gore Meeting Amy Johnson has accomplished all her gallops in, pleasing style and a repetition on the race track on Saturday would see her run as well as she did at Gore last month, where she was first and second.

Last Link was a little disappointing in his gallop this morning but he races better than he gallops and still looks dangerous in the Tradesmen's Handicap.
