RACING NEWS

THE LEVIN MEETING

TOMORROW'S FORM HORSES

USEFUL FIELDS ENGAGED

Though the fields for the two open events are on the small side, the acceptances for the other events at the Levin Racing Club's Annual Meeting at Levin tomorrow are of very satis- '■ factory dimensions, and the form shown should provide a valuable guide for the series of early summer fixtures to follow. The weather at last has some semblance of being settled, and a fine day tomorrow is a probability. The track should be in excellent order after the recent mixture of rain, wind, and sunshine. The Levin course, a mile in circumference, is a good one on ■; which to witness the racing. The club, though it was using the 1 "win-and-place system of betting twelve months ago, has reverted to the single- ' pool mode. A dividend indicator has ' been installed for the convenience of " investors. Two dividends will be paid in fields of five or more runners. Weekend excursion tickets available . for return till Monday are obtainable on the railway. Trains leave Thorndon tomorrow at 8.18 and 9.0 a.m., and return for Wellington at 6.0 p.m. The programme and review of pros- > pects are as follows:— [2.0 MAIDEN RACE, £70; about G furlongs. Distinguished S 7 Abracadabra . S 7 Conversion ... 8 7 Trlmden ... 8 7 , . Gold Vein ... 8 7 Shy 8 T Golden Chest . S 7 Middle S 7 Ruenzorl .... S 7 Hippolyta ... 8 7 J'rugal 8 7 Earl Colossus . 8 7 Gay Coat .... S 7 Tommy AtUina 8 7 Merry Night ..8 7 Meritor s 7 ■ Sunder 8 7 Gate Crasher .. 8 7 Golden Enterprise 8 7 Several horses engaged in the Maiden Race have given some recent , promise, among the number being Middle, Golden Chest, Ruenzori, Earl '. Colossus, and Conversion, and of these the first pair may be the likeliest, with Golden Chest particularly due for her first win after her two seconds in her two starts this term. The support Shy and Merry Night received in their only previous start this season also points to their prospects, Shy doing the better in his race, as he ran fourth. Thei-e is room for a surprise, . but on form a likely pair should be , Golden Chest and Shy (or Middle). 12.45 . MANAKAU HACK HURDLES, £80; IVmiles. ■ • Debut 10 6 Celedtas ....' 0 0 • Spender »11 Otauru King . 9 0 Gaswyn ....'. 9 0 ltoyal King ~ 9 0 ~ Affliction ... 9 0 Tambo . 9 0 Battleground . 9 0 Thrasher ... 9 0 They are a poor lot in the Manakau1 Hack Hurdles, with eight of the ten '; acceptors on the minimum, but the winner might emerge from this section. Debut, as a winner at Trentham,' . will be supported, and he is an improved horse, but he requires h.s own ' rules. Spender at last came htme at Bulls, so he may go on with it, as he is a well-bred, sort. Of the others Gaswyn must appeal with his weight, which seems a mistake, and Thrasher ... and Battleground have each run a second over fences this season. Two who may run prominently are Debut and Gas-wyn. uo 1 'WEBABOA HACK HANDICAP, £80; 7 fur-, longs. , Confiscation .99 Umpire 8 3 , Alcldea ...... 812 Consummation ' S 0 ■ Corroboroe ..8 7 Earl Colossus 8 0 -. Whetuma ... 8 5 Manuele .... 8 0 Colenso 8 4 Sunder 8 0 Mid Acre .... S 3 Trimden • S 0 Terry 8 3 Vinco 8 0 There will be followings for several horses in the Weraroa Hack Handicap, but the favourite will undoubtedly be Alcides, who has exposed his form with two seconds in two starts this season. Confiscation, a much-improved mare, is not out of it even v with her 9.9; but a likelier pair of opponents may be Corroboroe, still a maiden, though consistent efforts have kept up his weight, and Umpire, who ran an excellent race on the last day at the recent Wellington Meeting and now reads well through Confiscation. Colenso, Mid Acre, and Terry are lesser possibilities. A good pair may be Alcides and Umpire. 2.15 LEVIN HANDICAP, £150; I*4 miles. ■ Slippery ... 813 Gay Boy ... SO Mercian Prince 8 6 Hunting Lodgo 8 0 Eminent ... 8 1 Mlladl 7 10 In the Levin Handicap Slippery will probably be afforded another chance to show that he can win at 1J miles, and the persistence of his connections must mean that they still consider him capable. His recent form over shorter distances has been solid, a ■ factor that should stand him in good : stead. The pair who will probably ~ trouble him most are Gay Boy and Hunting Lodge. The former can stay the distance, and the latter ran Davistock to half a head at Bulls at her first start at 1} miles. Eminent and Miladi are previous winners of the race, but are without form. A good pair read to be Gay Boy and Slippery. 3.0 ; MAKO MAKO HACK HANTHCAP, £80; 6 furlengs. State Bant ~8 7 Garter Red .... 7 0 ■Pokiha 8 0 Myrlam ... 7 0 Whyte Melville 7 S Princess Dampier ... 7 2 La Jean 7 0 Blue Mauritius 7 0 Zionist 7 0 Golden Enterprise 7 0 . . Bettors are offered narrow scope on ■ form in the Mako Mako Handicap. - The only winner this term has been Pokiha, and as he showed much pro- ■ mise before his recent success at Hastings he looks the logical choice. State '■ Bank, who ran a good race at Trentham at his only recent start to finish sixth, may be best of the others. Whyttf Melville is liable to be fairly forward despite his twelve months' absence, and Myriam should be seasoned by now. Form indicates Pokiha and State Bank. 3.45 LAKE HACK CUP, £105; 1 milo and a distance. Round Score . 9 0 Umpire ... 75 Manawatu . 8 7 Battleground . 7 0 , Treasure Hunt 8 7 Cloudy Bay . 7 0 Darecourt ... 8 5 Imasurvcy .. 7 0 Pokiha 8 2 Mid Acre 7 0 Dorado .... 7 9 Pawky 7 0 Whetuma ... 7 7 ... 1 v A good field is carded for the Lake . Hack Cup, though several of the acceptors have another engagement. Round Score, wlio was somewhat disappointing at Trentham after winning at Otaki, is the type of hack for this class of race, and he may be the favourite. Manawatu, hurdle winner at Trentham, is a versatile horse, and Treasure Hunt is better than his recent southern efforts would show. Darecourt is coming back quickly to form, and other possibilities are Pokiha (if reserved), Dorado, Umpire, and Cloudy Bay. A pair who may be supported are Round Score and Darecourt. Mo j. b. McDonald memorial handicap. £100; 7 furlongs. Slippery ... 9 13 Knock Out ... 7 IS .Tubllee Song . 8 G Eplilnltcs ... 7 7 Miss Hushabyo 8 1 Lord Moutoa . 7 7 Mlladl 8 0 I'nrso 7 7 If started Slippery will be essaying his third consecutive win in the J. R. McDonald Memorial Handicap. Should he have missed a penalty for an earlier win during the day he will be one of the favourites. His most serious opposition promises to come from Jubilee Song, who was a recent winner at Bulls; and Purse might also make a showing, as she is coming all the way from Gisbornc. Miss Hushabye might surprise again, and Knock Out, though lacking recent racing.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

HEED'S LEVIN MOUNTS

FINAL AWAPUNI GALLOPS

(Special to the ''Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day. The conditions for track work at, Awapuni yesterday were particularly good, the morning being delightfully line an.d the course proper, which was open for the gallops, in splendid order. The flags were well over on the track and the horses were required to cover a lot of extra ground.

Merry Night (Reed), an acceptor for the maiden race at Levin, had Kitty Quin (W. E. Pine) as a companion over five furlongs. They begnn quietly, but were hitting out boldly over the last three furlongs, ■ Merry Night finishing resolutely a length in front after taking Imin 9sec for the journey.

Another attractive run was that in which Round Score (S. Anderson) and Hunting Lodge (Reed) were associated. It was over seven furlongs, and Round Score secured a half-length advantage before they had gone very far. They broke 28sec for the first two furlongs, and Round Score turned for home about a length in front of Hunting Lodge. It looked as if the gap would be the same at the post but Hunting Lodge made a dab in the last few strides and was within a neck at the finish; The time was lmiri 35sec. Both are engaged at Levin, Hunting Lodge in the Levin Handicap, and Round Score in the Lake Hack Cup. Corroboree (Reed) and Severe (L. H. Jones) were sprinted six furlongs. The former galloped very smoothly from the start, and, with Severe's not going kindly at any stage, he drew clear in the straight, completing the journey in Imin 20 2-ssec. Corroboree, who is in the Weraroa Hack, went pleasingly, but Severe was not her usual self.

Ruenzori (Anderson), another acceptor for the maiden event at Levin, had Princess La Jean (J. Rae) as a companion in a half-mile flutter, and Ruenzori "was a shade in front, the time being 53 2-ssec.

■ Tambo (C. Thomson) was put over five hurdles. He started rather scratchily but he flew the second fence and he continued with the good work, giving a pleasing exhibition. Frugal held a slight advantage over Round Up at the end of five furlongs cut out in Imin 7sec. It was quite a good gallop. King's Lancer (Pine) and Battle Pomp (B. Brown) took Imin 8 3-ssee for the same distance. They finished on terms, with King's Lancer doing his work very nicely. Treasure Hunt (Anderson) and Gold Cure (Reed) were galloped seven furlongs. Gold Cure held a slight advantage for two furlongs, but Treasure Hunt then ranged alongside and had displaced him at the half-mile. Treasure Hunt, an acceptor for the Lake Hack Cup, was half a length to the good at the home turn, and he retained this to the finish, the time being Imin 34 3-ssec.

. Bazaine. with Anderson up, recorded a smart five furlongs, being timed to cut the distance out in Imin 6 3-ssec, finishing .well.

Roy Reed, who returned from Australia on Wednesday, was out at Awapuni shortly after dawn yesterday ■morning. He looks as fit as a fiddle, and he spent a busy, morning riding many horses in their work. He will be in the saddle again at Levin, and two horses he has been engaged for are Hunting Lodge and Merry Night. .
