VALUABLE BEQUESTS

TO VICTORIA COLLEGE

The residuary estate of the late MA. R. Atkinson is to~be divided into ten shares, and advice was received at a meeting of the Victoria College Council last night that under the will two of these shares are to go to the college.

A letter, received from the solicitors acting for the .executors of the will stated that as the estate consisted-, almost entirely of money owing under mortgages of realty, no distribution could be made amongst the beneficiaries until such mortgages were realised It was only guesswork to say how much the college would ultimately receive, but the Stamp Office calculated one-tenth of the residue at about £1500 "This is a very valuable bequest" said the chairman, Mr. P. Levi. A valuable bequest of 1150 volumes to the college library was also made under the. will.

. "The books are a very valuable addition to our collection," wrote the librarian, Mr. H. G. Millar. "They include, a good many interesting sixteenth and seventeenth century books some interesting early translations of the Bible, a number,of modern'books dealing with the history of the Bible,, and a large number dealing with history, biography, Greek/Latin, and English literature. We were especially glad to receive some thirty volumes o£ Thomas Fuller, including several first editions."

On the motion, of Mr. Levi it was decided: that the council record its appreciation of-the liberal benefactions.
