SECOND HOCKEY TEST MATCH
(To tho Editor.) Sir, —"Sportsman's" letter to you published in last Saturday's "Post" is so vilifying and untrue that it cannot be allowed to pass unchallenged. Your correspondent could not possibly have selected a more inappropriate penname than "Sportsman"—a word, which his letter clearly indicates, he knows nothing about.
The statement that the Indians were penalised eight out of ten times is just as true as the correspondent's penname is inapplicable. A careful record of all penalties was kept and this disclosed that the penalties were actually two to one, not eight out of ten. The opinion of qualified critics is that the umpiring left little to be desired. One of the officiating umpires was the nominee of the Indians themselves for the first Test, and they were so satisfled with his performance that they nominated him for the second Test.— For the Wellington Hockey Umpires' Association, W. G. PURVES, president. E. D, CAMPBELL, lion, secretary.
